Our business was founded in the 1920’s by Therese Mölk. Though many things have changed over the years, one important thing has remained constant - our company is still run by the same family.
Let us take you on a journey through the history of our business! You can click on the images to take a closer look!
Mobile Supply:
In the 1920ies, the company already supplied its affiliated stores with their own vehicle.
After the Mölk family had been trading second-hand goods for a while, Therese Mölk returned to her roots and founded a grocery business with a new concept:
“A small product range in large quantities at low prices.”
Therese Mölk: “We were the first to sell lard after the war!”
In those days, edible fat was a rare and demanded commodity. Today, almost 80 years later, our customers have different needs, ideally 0% fat!
“Don’t forget to eat Mölk bread!”:
Therese Mölk buys the former royal and imperial military bakery Dreiheiligenstrasse 21 in Innsbruck and creates the Mölk Brot trademark for her bread.
The company’s main seat is also located in this building until the middle of the eighties.
Therese Mölk addresses her customers:
“The reason why I am able to sell my choice products at low prices is that I only sell for cash and because me and my children work for 12 hours every day and spend little, which is why we are absolutely trustworthy.”
Therese Mölk:
“I greet all Tyrolean housewives and promise to continue my work in their best interest!”
The German population is urged not to shop at Mpreis.
The “Anschluss” to the Third Reich means great uncertainty for Therese Mölk. The business is temporarily under commissarial administration by order of the Gestapo for nine months.
The family does not know whether any of their property will remain as the business is to be liquidated.
A three-storey warehouse is built in Dreiheiligenstrasse in Innsbruck. At this stage the company has 145 employees.
The first customer card: Mölk really helps you save money! In return for your immediate cash payment you receive 3% discount for every Schilling in the form of MÖLK discount stamps. The value of the full card is öS 15.-!
In the summer of 1974, the MPREIS Warenvertriebs GmbH was founded and on August 13, the first MPREIS supermarket was opened on Andechsstrasse 3. The Therese Mölk store that already existed in this location store was adapted and modernised to represent the new supermarket image.
Parallel to the change of the company’s name and its legal status, the business strategy was also reformulated. The clearly arranged self-service stores replace the traditional grocery stores with service by a shop assistant. This new concept reflected the changing demands of customers and proved to be very successful.
Costumers gathered in front of the store in such large numbers that they could only be admitted in groups.
The administrative offices and the warehouses on Dreiheiligenstrasse and at the western train station move to the company’s new headquarters in Völs near Innsbruck.
In the mid eighties, the Therese Mölk store on Maria Theresienstrasse was one of the last of its kind. The outdated grocery store was just too small and narrow for a modern MPREIS supermarket. This led to the idea of a bread store where customers could not only buy bread but also enjoy coffee, cakes, snacks and a variety of fresh juices.
On June 26, 1989 the first Baguette was opened!
The central warehouse in Völs once again reaches the limit of its capacity. After a record construction time of five months, the modernised MPREIS logistics centre in Völs with a storage space of 21.000 m2 begins operations. At the same time, two parallel office tracts (so-called wagons) are placed on top of the existing administrative buildings and in May 2001 the staff moves into the new offices.
100 Baguette stores are a reason to celebrate: the two stores at Telfs Sagl and in the Würth building centre both open on November 22 to celebrate this record number.
Expansion beyond Austria:
MPREIS expands beyond Austria. On May 7, the first MPREIS outside of Austria is inaugurated in Bruneck, Italy. There is a real run of the South-Tyrolean customers.
Fit for Future:
MPREIS places particular importance on future-oriented projects in the training of its apprentices. In that year, the business receives the Fit for Future Award 2003 from the economic chamber and the department of trade and industry.

The independent economic committee “Initiatives Business for Art” and the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation ORF awards MPREIS with the 15th edition of its art sponsorship prize “MAECENAS 2003”. MPREIS receives the prestigious award for its literary delicatessen paper.
MPREIS (as the building owner) and four teams of architects (Alles Wird Gut, pool Architektur, the next ENTERPRISE-architects, querkraft architekten) were selected by the commissioner Martha Schreieck to represent Austria at the 9th Architecture Exhibition of the Biennale of Venice 2004.

MPREIS-architecture nominated for Austrian State Award:
A high-profile jury of experts selected six projects out of 50 for the State Award “Architecture 2006 New Work Environments in Administration and Trade”. MPREIS was also among the nominees.
Christian Kühn, member of the jury and director of the Austrian Foundation for Architecture said: “While other supermarket chains try to promote their brand with a unified style of architecture, MPREIS achieves the same result through variety. Only the red MPREIS cube is a common feature."
MPREIS receives an honorary prize from the Cultural Association of the Turkish Community in Tyrol for the support and integration of employees of Turkish origin at their workplace.
