Coeliac disease, also called sprue or gluten intolerance, is a chronic disorder that affects the mucosa of the small intestine due to a reaction to gluten proteins that are contained in many types of grains.

If affected individuals consume foodstuffs that contain gluten, their bowel tissue reacts by absorbing fewer nutrients. This can produce symptoms such as weight loss, diarrhoea, loss of hair and vomiting.

Treatment:

Currently, the only effective treatment consists in a completely gluten-free diet that permits the bowel to heal and reduces the risk of long-term effects.

A gluten-free diet (e.g. potatoes, corn, rice, soybeans, pseudocereals, millet, vegetables, fruit, meat and fish, eggs, milk and dairy products) leads to a complete remission of symptoms. Products that contain wheat, spelt, green spelt, Kamut, Einkorn wheat, Emmer, oats, barley or rye must be avoided.
