An increasing number of individuals suffer from symptoms of lactose (milk sugar) intolerance.

Lactose intolerance is the inability to metabolize lactose contained in milk and dairy products due to a lack of an enzyme called lactase. This causes large amounts of milk sugar, which should be digested in the small intestine, to reach the large intestine where it is fermented as a nutrient by the intestinal flora. This process produces a lot of gas that can lead to a bloated feeling, flatulence, stomach cramps and frequently to diarrhoea.

Treatment:

Physiological (natural) lactase deficiency and inherited lactase deficiency cannot be treated. However, its symptoms are alleviated by adopting a diet that reduces lactose intake to a minimum (this requires the prevention of calcium deficiency).
